This is a truly tragic and demoralizing story. I don’t even want to get into the details and I’m going to copy and paste my friend’s (her cousin) words to describe what took place. Please Reblog this post, this story needs to be heard:  http://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/jozh6/could_you_stay_in_a_relationship_where_the/ My cousin Nazish Noorani was insensibly murdered 3...

robertreich: Not only is the United States slouching toward a double dip, but so is Europe. New data out today show even Europe’s strongest core economies – Germany, France, and the Netherlands – slowing to a crawl. We’re on the cusp of a global recession. Policy makers be warned: Austerity is the wrong…

mohandasgandhi: http://www.commondreams.org/view/2011/08/16 The killing of Osama Bin Laden did not put cuts in national security spending on the table, but the debt-ceiling debate finally did. Democrats erupt over latest plan on debt ceiling →
As President Obama pushed hard for a grand deal to reduce the federal deficit, he ignited a furor among congressional Democrats on Thursday by appearing to retreat from his insistence that spending cuts and revenue increases be included in the same package… An early version of the plan would lock in cuts in spending and social programs, as Republicans want, but appeared to defer decisions on...

Tumble DC 25: Why Politicians Lie →
politicalprof: I know, I know: you’re thinking politicians lie as a defect of character. They lie because they’re liars. So why bother to discuss it? I want to suggest that there’s a different, more persuasive account for why politicians lie: They lie because we make them lie. They lie…

zeitgeistmovement: In the July issue of National Geographic, writer Charles Siebert takes an in-depth look the world’s impending food crisis — in order to feed our growing population, we’ll need to double food production. But as Siebert finds, the potential for a sustainable supply does exist. As his report states: Food varieties extinction is happening all over the world — and it’s happening...

abcnewsradio: (GASTONIA, N.C.) — A 59-year-old man has been jailed in Gastonia, N.C., on charges of larceny after allegedly robbing an RBC Bank for $1 so he could get health care in prison. He then sat down and waited for police to arrive. “…I say, ‘I’ll be...

Chomsky: Wealthiest 1% rule our politics →
So Noam talks about the global capital concentrated within the hands of the few, and the struggle it will take to combat it. I wanted to share this article because of how different it is than Noam’s usual rants. I agree with most of what he says, but his analyses contain a pessimistic and cynical theme. This is one of the rare reads where he actually has positive input about the future and...

White House says they don't need congress... →
So the White House came out on Wednesday and defended its actions in Libya against its opponents who say that the action has no legal basis. Both parties are attacking the President on this. I can see the Democrats attacking him. At least it shows they are consistent. Why would the Republicans ever in their right mind attack him on this? Where was the War Power Act violations when George W waged...

"British fear 'American-style' healthcare system" →
stuffsickpeoplehavetoputupwith: Two years ago, Britons were outraged when U.S. politicians like Sarah Palin, in the debate over healthcare reform, turned this country’s National Health Service into a public whipping boy, denouncing it as “evil,” “Orwellian” and generally the enemy of everything good and true. It’s time for some payback. Britain is now embroiled in a healthcare argument of...

letterstomycountry: Peter Bach and Robert Kocher make an argument in The New York Times that I hear frequently from physicians but continue not to really understand. Their claim is that the high cost of medical school accounts for why so few doctors want to be GPs: Huge medical school debts — doctors now graduate owing more than $155,000 on average, and 86 percent have some debt — are why...

Why Ron Paul's Prediction of the future is WRONG →
MY TAKE So another article written by Ron Paul warning about our march towards doom. I agree that the federal government is at its limit for war time powers and infringements on liberties via the Patriot Act. Having said this, I think he’s being a bit extreme in his assessment of tyrants taking over the US due to these laws. I believe democracy is a pendulum and if it goes too far in one...

Salon article about cell phones really stupid →
MY TAKE When you read this article, it goes into how cell phones are carcinogenic, and there’s a link between brain tumors and cell phone use. Then it goes onto say how the study was flawed and there isn’t enough evidence. What was the point of this article? I had to post this out of pure curiosity.
