NPR - The 200 members of Patriotic Millionaires for Fiscal Strength are advocating higher taxes on the wealthy. Group member Dennis Mehiel says this is part of balancing the country’s fiscal policy. Host Michel Martin speaks with Mehiel to learn more about this concept. Martin also checks in with Washington D.C. restaurant owner Andy Shallal for his views on taxing the business elite.
Why don’t they just donate to the Treasury if they want to pay so much in taxes? There really isn’t anything patriotic, especially in America of all places, about asking to have more of your property taken from you and those in your income bracket by force. If you want to give more to the government, then do so, don’t force everyone else that makes as much money as you to do so as well.
Reason has a nice video on the rich begging to be taxed more.
MY TAKE
The idea behind going to congress and asking the taxes to be raised is not to just give more, but to draw attention to the cause and have the other super wealthy join them in trying to help the country. The only way a difference will be made is if we raise the tax bracket on all top earning Americans. We are heading to a place where social mobility is becoming more and more difficult, especially for those at the very bottom. If the rich themselves aren’t willing to compromise, eventually we may not have a choice but to become a socialistic republic.
