Robert Reich: How Austerity Is Ushering in a Global Recession

robertreich:

Not only is the United States slouching toward a double dip, but so is Europe. New data out today show even Europe’s strongest core economies – Germany, France, and the Netherlands – slowing to a crawl.

We’re on the cusp of a global recession.

Policy makers be warned: Austerity is the wrong…

"Last year my federal tax bill … was $6,938,744. That sounds like a lot of money. But what I paid was only 17.4 percent of my taxable income — and that’s actually a lower percentage than was paid by any of the other 20 people in our office. Their tax burdens ranged from 33 percent to 41 percent and averaged 36 percent."

The Cuddle Matress
Embracing technology: The Love Matress could strengthen relationships, says its designer, by letting partners remain cuddled together
Because their body is supported by the slats on each side of the encircling arm, it should not get squashed, however long it is left there.
The man behind the mattress is award-winning designer Mehdi Mojtabavi

“A loving embrace, especially between partners, is one of the most calming actions. Embracing, and bodily proximity and connection after love-making, are very important for strengthening relationships,” Mr Mojtabavi claims.
“However, what usually stops this pleasant state is not mental tiredness, it is physical weakness.”

Brilliant.

This not only applies to Iraq, but to pretty much any war we’ve been a part of since Vietnam.

Tumble DC 25: Why Politicians Lie

politicalprof:

I know, I know: you’re thinking politicians lie as a defect of character. They lie because they’re liars. So why bother to discuss it?

I want to suggest that there’s a different, more persuasive account for why politicians lie: They lie because we make them lie. They lie…

BREAKING: Case against Strauss-Kahn near collapse, law-enforcement officials say. NYT exclusive.

joshsternberg:

soupsoup:

Prosecutors from the office of District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr., who initially were emphatic about the strength of the case and the account of the victim, plan to tell the court on Friday that they “have problems with the case” based on what their investigators have discovered, and will disclose more details of their findings to the defense.

“It is a mess, a mess on both sides,” the official said.

According to the two law enforcement officials, the woman had a phone conversation with an incarcerated man within a day of her encounter with Mr. Strauss Kahn in which she discussed the possible benefits of pursing the charges against him. The conversation was recorded.

If this is the case, and the D.A.’s office doesn’t have the case it thought it did, this is two really big blows to Cyrus Vance, the Manhattan District attorney. Last month, the D.A.’s office lost a different rape case, involving two NYPD officers who were acquitted on rape and felony charges of an accused woman (even though they were still found guilty of “official misconduct for entering the woman’s apartment while on duty when they had no official reason to do so.”

Vance took the helm of the D.A.’s office after Robert Morgenthau retired as the city’s top prosecutor in 2009. Morganthau’s shadow looms large in the District Attorney’s office and Vance is working hard - with smaller Assistant District Attorneys - to carve his own path.
